ABOUT PEPE

Pepe, a spider monkey, endured eight years of severe abuse in a circus in Cusco, Peru. Chained by the neck with a wired-on collar, his canine teeth were brutally snapped off to prevent him from defending himself, and he was kept in isolation, deprived of social contact with other monkeys.

In 2015, Animal Defenders International (ADI), in collaboration with Peruvian authorities enforcing a 2012 ban on wild animals in circuses, rescued Pepe as part of their Operation Spirit of Freedom.
